Say goodnight, Gracie

Goodbye, Gracie. You’ve been a very sweet cat and companion for all the many years we’ve known each other. Since you were a little kitten and I was a kid we’ve grown up together and played together. I remember the time you snuck into the neighbor’s house through their attic window, and the time we tied a glow-stick to your collar and then followed you on your nighttime neighborhood romp.

And of course, the hours and hours you lulled me into afternoon naps on the couch with your contagious sleepy purring.

It was very scary when we found that cancer in your leg years ago and they said we had to amputate. I thought I was going to lose you. But you healed and surprised us all. You bounced around on three legs and caught birds and squirrels like a cat several years your junior.

You grew old and pleasantly testy. You weren’t afraid to give a person a gentle slap (claws drawn in, of course) if they pet you the wrong way. We started to have to pick you up when you wanted to get up on the couch or the bed.

You started to lose your sight and drop weight, but refused to give in. You still curled up on the couch and purred long after people said you wouldn’t make it another month, week, day. You got the best hospice care the family could provide – warm blankets, tuna fish can water (your favorite) and lots of love, right up until your last moments.

We’ll miss you very much.

  1. I’m so sorry you lost your cat. We lost our Golden Retriever over 12 years ago and haven’t been able to get another pet since. Jo

  2. Oh, Amy, I am so sorry. Hugs to you and god speed sweet Gracie.

  3. I’m so sorry to hear about your Gracie! We lost our cat Helper last year – he was old and it was time, but it doesn’t make it easier. Our furry friends are a part of our lives and it hurts so much when they leave us.

  4. I lost my golden Riley last year. He was unquestioningly devoted and always loving. Harder to lose than people sometimes.
Your Gracie will be with you always.
